L.A. BOXING -EL PASO (JAN. 2011)

I was to submit a story about a mixed martial arts tournament for the El Paso Tribune but when I went to do the interview to get all the info I was told the whole thing was cancelled. in the final hour I still had to submit an article to the tribune to take the spot that was already alloted for the MMA story. So I put together this article on the L.A. BOXING GYM in El Paso. The story made the deadline but it was decided by the editors to save it for a fitness special the newspaper was going to do, of which never materialized. The story itself is still valid.

“Train Like Your Life Depends On It”

By. A. Lawless

Seventeen years ago the UFC was a term viewed upon as a barbaric sport catering only to those who appreciated the sights and sounds of bones breaking and faces bleeding. With the passage of time, that which was once held with such distaste is now a household word revered and looked upon as a sport of honor, dedication, and discipline. These 3 qualities are character traits possessed by all great fighters but the foundation to their great fighting abilities lies within their training. For it is in their training where they learn about honor, dedication, and discipline. To be a great fighter you must train like your life depends on it and one of the best places to train in El Paso is at 3136 Trawood at place called LA BOXING.

Opened in the summer of 2006, LA Boxing was one of the first gyms in El Paso, which focused on mixed martial arts training. The gym has its own boxing ring and full size 16-foot fighting octagon cage along with thirty, 150-pound Muay Thai punching bags. Boxing, Kickboxing and Mixed Martial Arts are the fundamental classes taught there. These classes teach the basics of the Combat Sports Fighting Arts, but at the same time incorporate a standard cardio workout regimen suitable for all walks of life. General Manager, Larry Stelley explained, “A 1 hr class at LA Boxing is a 800 to 1000 calorie Cardio Bomb! You not only burn higher calories because of the nonstop movement, but you actually get tremendous muscle tone striking that 150lb. Muay Thai bag. Your mental strength is worked intensely also by focusing on the different combinations being taught by our instructors who are experienced fighters. While you are burning the calories you are also learning realistic self-defense and fighting skills. You can get more out of our 1 hour “Knockout Workout” than doing 2-3 hours on the treadmill or pumping weight.” LA Boxing offers an introductory free class for those who are interested in learning more about the gym and what it has to offer. There are several different membership packages available ranging from short-term memberships on a month-to-month basis to long term membership ranging from 1 year to 3 years. Once you are a member, the gym is available for your use all day during business hours along with the benefits of a professional weight room, cardio equipment and their unique training facility which includes the 30 Muay Thai heavy bags, professional boxing ring and the 16 ft. cage octagon. For those who are serious about their health/fitness and interested in self-defense training, then LA Boxing is the gym that will give them the tools, the education, the encouragement, and the in ring fighting experience to get them in the best shape of their life.

There are a lot of great gyms and fitness centers in El Paso, each with their own advantages and benefits. LA Boxing is unique gym because of its focus on intense training for those interested in boxing, mixed martial arts, and kickboxing. In the spring of this year, LA Boxing will be a premiere sponsor of Bloodsport Championships, a professionally sanctioned, Boxing/MMA/KB Combat Sports Event Series. Which will aim to showcase the best regional and national fighters of combat sports. To become a fighter you must start with your foundation of training. Getting in shape and staying in shape requires dedication and discipline, but once you start, who knows, maybe you will train hard enough to become the next great combat sports fighter.
